In respect of doubles matches, please make note of the following;
There has been some discussion over the "coaching" rules when playing doubles. So I will attempt to clarify the position.
Prior to a players visit, the player can discuss shot selection/tactics with their doubles partner. The player’s visit commences when they touch the table when making ready to play their chosen first shot or when the player strikes the cue ball with their tip. After this time, there will be no further discussion between the players, until the conclusion of that visit. Penalty- foul- two shots.
I don't expect people to get called on a foul for brushing against the table, leaning on it, pointing at a ball etc. To do so would be absurd. Basically, you can't talk between shots. I would expect people to make bland comments of encouragement to their partners, like "Good shot," and such, but it is the referee who decides the difference between that and coaching.
Equally coaching from the team is not allowed and should be dealt with by means of a warning, then game away for a second violation.
This is an EPA ruling and should always be our fall-back position.
Furthermore, there was a 2 minute ruling brought in at an AGM, which still stands. The ruling allows only 2 minutes for doubles partners to discuss their shot selection. After 90 seconds, they should be given a warning that they have 30 seconds left. Then 2 minutes they must stop talking. The player whose turn it is can continue to decide his shot – but the conferring must stop. If they continue to talk after the 2 minutes then a foul is to be called and 2 shots awarded. On the whole, this rule has been fairly relaxed and is merely there to prevent 20minute discussions, which I have seen. I would suggest that should players be taking a ridiculous amount of time, then the referee gives a “30 seconds left” warning, then calls a foul if they confer after that period. This would have to be timed properly and is the referee’s decision.
Should there be any disagreement over any matters, then they should be discussed in a proper way, through their team captains. If a sensible agreement cannot be reached, then the matter should be brought to the attention of myself. The matter will be decided at the next meeting in consultation with all the team captains making a reasoned decision. This is a very friendly league, and I would like it to remain so.
